Task 11: Write a diary entry about living on the Gold Fields.
Task 26: Pretend you have just arrived at the gold fields from England. Describe what you hear, see and smell.
I'm beginning to wish I never left England. All I can see for miles and miles is hard, red dirt. The stench of the digger's sweat fills the air. The sound of pick axes smashing rock rings in my ears. Smash, Smash, Smash. I suppose I had better get used to this place. I will be living here for the next three years.
Task 6: Study a group that was present on the goldfields such as women, Aboriginies or the Chinese. How was life different for them?
The Chinese By the time word spread to China about the Australian Gold Rush, the country was experiencing war and starvation. Many men left their wives and children to see what they could find in Australia. When the Chinese finally reached Australia in cramped boats, they formed into groups with a leader in charge. Each group was assigned to a different task such as preparing meals, mining or growing vegetables. Many men sent the money they had earned home to their families.
The Chinese diggers were very unusual in the opinion of the European prospectors. This is because of their difference in language, religon, diet and their technique to mining. The Chinese were also disliked because of their 'unusual' appearance. They mined wearing their hair in a pig-tail, strange hats, bare-feet and bizarre clothes. This made the Chinese an aim of an unfair amount of racism. The Asian men were honest and obeyed the law.
A few Chinese men left Australia after the Gold Rush, but many stayed here with their families and decided to call Australia 'home.' Progressively, the Chinese were accepted and respected by Australian civilization.
Task 28: Study a town or city in Australia that owes its fame to the discovery of gold. Design an advertising campain to attract tourists based on its history, attractions, accommodation and facilities that it offers today.
